My Tennis Background:
I started playing at the age of 7 at Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, moving up through the ranks in the club and beyond. I have represented the Yorkshire men’s 1st team since 2005 and was a touring professional on the ATP/ITF tour reaching a career high of 810 in the world and 10 in the UK. My coaching journey started while I was still competing in 2010. I worked in some of the largest performance centres in the North of England before taking a role of Head of Performance tennis at ILTSC in 2014. I started my current role of Head Coach in September 2023.
My Role at the club:
I am involved in all areas of Tennis at the club. But a great deal of my day to day is spent running and delivering the club’s performance programme, which with my playing background is an area of Tennis at the club that I feel a particular affinity with, having come through this programme myself.Alongside this I am always very happy to work with all members to achieve their individual Tennis goals. I am also on hand to provide new member Tennis inductions and to assist Team captains throughout the year!
My Philosophy:
I believe in keeping things personal and practical. My coaching philosophy centres around customising lessons to fit each player’s unique needs. Understanding what players want to achieve is at the core of what I do. I strive to be the kind of coach who provides individualised attention, communicates clearly, and fosters a supportive team environment. My goal is to empower players on their journey to reaching their personal goals.
My Tennis Background:
I have over 12 years coaching experience & began coaching after a successful playing career.
In my playing career I achieved ITF World rankings in both singles and doubles, was British Junior number 1 & represented GB before going to play College Tennis in the USA on a Tennis Scholarship. I have played for Yorkshire for many years & I captained the Yorkshire Ladies Team for the last 5 years helping Yorkshire win the famous County Cup Race in 2022. I still enjoy competing now & continue to represent Yorkshire in the Over 35’s.
My Role at the Club:
Coming from a strong playing background my main role at the club is working within the Junior Performance programme. I also coach adult intermediate and advanced groups at the club & have a wealth of experience coaching all ages and abilities.
My Philosophy:
Having played at the highest levels myself, I have an in-depth knowledge of what is required to reach the top levels of the game as both a senior and Junior. With this, alongside my passion and enthusiasm for the sport, I firmly believe I can help anyone improve & reach their full potential, and I take great pride and enjoyment in doing so on a daily basis here at ILTSC.
My Tennis Background:
First team men’s and mixed Harrogate district league from the age of 15.
Coached at various premier venues in the north including David Lloyd Harrogate, Ripon tennis centre and Ampleforth college.
My role at ILTSC:
I coach a mixed level of player here at the club, including adult group and individual sessions up to team level.
I also take a lot of our under 8s development sessions including talent ID groups and leading our monthly U8 matchplays, as well as working with our U10 performance players.
My philosophy:
To me coaching means unlocking a growth mindset and embracing mistakes while consistently aiming for better. I believe a player always has room to improve regardless of age and or ability.
My Tennis Background:
My involvement in tennis began as an 11 year old here at ILTSC being coached by my dad. At 16 I was part of an Ilkley junior team that finished 4th in the country at the Rover National League Finals, and made my first appearance for the Ilkley 1st team ages 17.
I also represented Leeds Metropolitan University during my 3 years studying there.
My coaching career began at John Charles Centre for Sport before joining ILTSC. With over 14 years experience I have delivered a wide range of classes including disability, schools, under 10 performance, tennis express, cardio tennis and tennis tykes.
My Role at ILTSC:
My role at ILTSC is to deliver development group coaching squads for both juniors and adults, as well as individual coaching sessions for all ages
My Coaching Philosophy
I believe that my long standing association with the club, where I developed my own passion for tennis, equips me well to teach others and inspire them to enjoy the sport, whilst maximising their potential.
My tennis background:
I came into tennis relatively late having played numerous sports to a high level. I am the youngest in a family of four where sport has been our life really! I terms of playing I’ve represented the club’s 1st team and even have my name on the honours board in doubles! (I had a good partner!) I have coached for twenty years and have been at the club since 2005.
My role at ILTSC:
My main role at the club is on the development side of things. This includes coaching Children and Adults on a daily basis. I am also involved in the schools outreach programme and delivering sports camps. I am also qualified to help in the performance programme if needed.
My coaching philosophy:
A simple one really: Educate and enjoy. I want to help anyone who is keen to learn, but for me having fun in the process is key.
My Tennis Background:
I have played from the age of seven but from the age of sixteen to twenty six I was lucky enough to head into full time training both here at ILTSC and at Leeds Beckett university. I have competed all around the country in British Tour events but where I really excelled was playing University tennis in a team environment!
My Role at ILTSC:
My role is a mixture of leading and assisting in the development programme, as well as assisting within our Performance Programme. With individual lessons I cater from beginner/entry level all the way through to performance players regularly playing tournaments.
My Philosophy:
“Every journey starts with a single step” so whether you are a beginner or a consistent tournament player I will help you with the appropriate steps you can make to reach your goals.
My Tennis Background:
I have been playing tennis for over 45 years. During my policing career I played for the West Yorkshire Police at regional and national levels and still represent Great Britain at the World Police & Fire Games around the world, winning gold medals in both singles and doubles. I have played for Yorkshire as a veteran, and have captained and played for Ilkley in the Leeds League 1st Team, Yorkshire League 1st Team and National League 1st Team. I have won the Over 45 singles at the Club Championships five times, and the doubles seven times. I have been a Club Coach at Ilkley for twelve years.
My Role at ILTSC:
I am a Club Coach, having coached all stages from Mini Red to Full Ball. I also provide individual lessons for children and adults.
My Coaching Philosophy:
That sounds a bit pretentious. My style and strengths? Same goes for that. I do know how to play tennis, and I know how to make others play better. I love tennis. I love watching it, playing it and coaching it. Enthusiasm is my biggest strength. So, there you go; one out of three isn’t bad.
My Tennis Background:
I competed as a junior and senior at national and international levels and trained in the national squad for a number of years and won many tournaments at all levels. I have worked at several clubs and centres across London-Yorkshire
My Role at ILTSC:
I currently run the Outreach adult groups on a Saturday morning.
Available for Junior and Adult individual lessons.
My Coaching Philosophy:
I have covered all levels and areas of coaching, from full time players, performance to beginners. I have coached Juniors-Adults and enjoy taking individuals and groups of all ages and standards.
My playing and coaching background:
Racket sports are my background – from tennis when Ilkley’s clubhouse was a wooden shed, to squash when Jonah Barrington gave me his racket. I first played padel with friends in Spain and then Yorkshire started opening padel courts and I was hooked. I have coached and taught racket sports for over 20 years – 13 years at Ampleforth College as head of Girls Games, Assistant Head of Middle School. I play padel and squash at representative age group for England and GB – it’s fun. Padel is just growing and growing and I am fortunate enough to be on the track with it.
My role at Ilkley:
To help the Head of Rackets in promoting padel to all members at Ilkley. I love padel and so am delighted to share my knowledge and enthusiasm to all members at the club. In addition to coaching and I am keen to help members play as much as possible at the club, as a team and representing the club at tournaments beyond Ilkley. In addition, with my squash background I am running some Racketball sessions for females and playing squash in the leagues.
My coaching philosophy:
Understand the player in front of me and helping them enjoy the game to achieve the best they can from the sport
