JUNE CLUB NEWS

JM GLENDINNING NEWS

Should my Mortgage be on my Lender’s Standard Variable Rate?

Since January 2010, some mortgage lenders have increased their standard variable rate for existing borrowers into double figures. This started with the small building societies but has since built momentum with some of the larger societies now increasing rates even though the Bank of England has not increased interest rates from 0.5% for over twelve months.

These changes have increased the confusion for some borrowers as to whether to stick with the standard variable rate or to switch onto either a tracker rate or fixed rate mortgage. Most borrowers have been happy to stick with the lenders standard variable, as rates have been stable and in a lot of cases lower than what borrowers have paid on fixed rates in the past! With a new Government in place and the changes made by several lenders, this approach should be re-appraised.

It is against this backdrop that JMG are offering all Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club members and staff, a free mortgage review to help them decide whether the time is right to look at restructuring their mortgage payments, or if in fact they are still in the best place at this point in time.

We would encourage people to take advantage of this offer, and in the first instance to contact Paul Davison on 01943 876 631, his mobile 07798 655 492, or to e-mail him on paul.davison@jmgib.co.uk

Please note that we do not charge a fee for our services, but receive a commission from the lender. Also, remember that your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

The action kicks off with the JM Glendinning Group Men’s International Tennis Tournament, part of the AEGON Pro Series (4th - 10th July) which will see players from over 30 countries battling it out for the men’s singles and doubles title and for world ranking points. This is closely followed by the prestigious Group 2 AEGON Summer County Cup event- also sponsored locally by the JM Glendinning Group (19th-23rd July) where top British ladies from the 6 counties of Devon, Derbyshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Dorset will play for the title and for promotion to Group 1 next year. Hot on the heels of County Week, the JM Glendinning Group Ilkley Open, part of the AEGON British Tour will conclude this feast of tennis, (24th - 31st July) and with 30 events from the Men’s and Ladies British Tour to national standard junior events (including mini tennis), veterans and handicap events this tournament will again give members of whatever level, the chance to play in and/or watch top class tennis right here at the club.

Once again we thank title sponsors, the JM Glendinning Group together with secondary sponsors, Garbutt & Elliott Accountants, Last Cawthra Feather Solicitors, Appleyard Jaguar Bradford, Bradford Grammar School, Bolton Abbey Mowers, Priceless Print, Alan Picken (Business Transfer Agency), and Clough Tomblin for their fantastic support of these events.

We have always had a strong entry in our events…Tim Henman was a winner of the Junior Ilkley Open in the past and previous Wimbledon Champions, Amelie Mauresmo and Jamie Murray also played at Ilkley in our international event in 1994 and 2005, respectively.

NEWS FROM OUR SPONSORS JM GLENDINNING LIFE & PENSIONS

Are you worried about volatile returns on your investments? Then you might be interested in potentially removing this risk!

Recent volatility in world stock markets has put many people off investing their well earned capital - preferring instead the ‘perceived’ security of banks and building societies but currently with little or no capital growth. Whilst we all enjoy the good times when returns are high, naturally not all of us have got the appetite for the associated risk when markets go down.

Exciting new investment alternatives mean that in many respects you can now lock in any gains but protect against market downturns! - enjoying the capital growth or increasing income when stock markets are going up and locking in those gains, but providing protection against falls in the stock market. To benefit from any guarantee the plan is written for a fixed term at outset, and unless the actual value is higher than the locked in value you need to hold the plan for the full term to secure the locked in values, unless earlier death occurs.

If you like the idea of enjoying the upside whilst protecting against the potential downside, this plan offered by one of the world’s largest insurance companies, MetLife Europe Ltd could be just for you.

To find out more please contact Andy Holder or Richard Carr at JM Glendinning on 01943 876631 for further information and a no obligation initial discussion at our expense. Please note that this product may not be suitable for every investor and we will not make any recommendations until we have made a full assessment of your circumstances. MetLife Europe Ltd are an affiliate of Met Life inc who, as at 31st December 2008 have $501.7 billion* in total assets. The guarantees* are provided by MetLife.

ILTSC HAS A NEW MANAGER - Nicole Demot

I am delighted to join ILTSC as the new General Manager and look forward to building on all the excellent work Caroline, the staff, elected members and members have already done.

I know the ILTSC and the Wharfe Valley very well and I have many friends, sports associates and people who I know who are, or have been members at the club, so I've got a fair understanding of what the club offers and how people use and enjoy the club.

I have been in the sport, health and fitness industry for over 20 years working for a wide range of organisations including Sport England (Senior Regional Manager 1999 - 2007) where I was responsible for developing funding packages for major capital and revenue projects across our region. I worked with the Department of Health and key stakeholders to develop the Physical Activity Framework forYorkshire (2006-2011).

I've also held various roles in different Local Authorities including managing the contract for Wigan Leisure Services (8 sports centres including Robin Park Indoor Tennis Centre) and coordinating grant aid and income generation for many sports organisations in the voluntary, public and private sectors. I owned and run my own health and fitness club (1996 to 2002) and most recently I ran my own Hypoxi-Therapy / Altitude Training business at David Lloyd Health Club and L A Fitness North Leeds.

I hope to use the skills I have to support, enhance and develop the excellent range of Tennis, Squash and Fitness facilities, coaching, classes, matches and tournaments - ensuring that ILTSC is clearly focused on you, the members.

Thank you. Nicole Demot

PLEASE REMEMBER:

Only still water is allowed on the indoor court area. There are numerous stains due to spilt juice, fizzy drinks and tea/coffee. If you see anyone drinking anything other than still water, please inform a member of staff immediately.

Please ensure only tennis shoes are worn on all tennis court surfaces and non-marking soles on the squash courts – this applies to all activities including fitness classes.

Please be respectful to your club and other members by adhering to these rules.

Guaranteed investment solutions for uncertain times

Unless you've been in hibernation you will have noticed that there has been some volatility in the financial markets in recent times! In fact across the last 13 years the UK stock market has had some major ups and downs due to a number of factors, most recently the credit crunch.

With all that said, equities do offer good long term returns, although the danger being that when you want your capital or your income from your investment it is just the time when the stock market has crashed and you are now set to get back less than you expected, putting a strain on your finances and standard of living.

Many people have recently looked towards cash to make sure their investments are safe which in turn creates its own problems! Current interest rates are at an all time low and inflation looks to be on the up (3.5% announced recently). This in effect means that the value of your money is reducing as it can buy less. The fact remains that investing in the stock market is a solid long term way of beating inflation, but with the inherent risk that we will see further stock market corrections along the way.

So what can you do to stop that risk? For the last 15 years or so, there have been products available that allow you to invest with returns linked to and dependent on stock market returns, with a guarantee that you will get your money back, usually providing you hold the investment for a fixed period of time. Some of these provide a base level that your investment cannot fall below, for example what you invested. The problem is that because of the volatility in the stock market you might only get a return of capital!

A new breed of product goes a step further than this and 'locks in' your gains periodically so investing in the stock market means that when it performs you get the benefit and when it crashes you are not exposed to it! All in all this can be a win-win solution for clients looking for stock market returns but without the volatility. These new products are not however suitable for everyone and we therefore strongly recommend you consult an independent financial adviser, who will determine your personal circumstances, needs and objectives and risk profile before making any recommendation.

For further information, please contact Andy Holder or Richard Carr at JM Glendinning Life + Pensions on 01943 876631.

Although the Bond provides a significant level of protection, it is not a guaranteed investment and capital may be at risk. Repayment of capital depends on the performance of the FTSE 100 Index as noted in the summary below. The product might appeal to income investors who seek regular above-average income and who are prepared to accept some risk to their capital. I would however stress that the plan will not be suitable for everyone and we would undertake a full review of a clients attitude towards investment risk, their circumstances, needs and objectives before providing any recommendation.

The offer in summary is as follows:

· Six-year investment

· Income payable monthly or annually

· Income rates:

o Monthly payment option – 0.53% gross paid monthly in arrears

o Annual payment option – 6.5% gross paid annually in arrears

· Full repayment of investors’ capital unless the FTSE 100 falls by more than 50% during the term and fails to recover to its starting level by maturity. In this event capital will be reduced 1:1 in line with the Index. For example, if at commencement of the plan the FTSE 100 'initial index level' was 5400 and during the term it dropped to 2646 (51% drop) but had then recovered to at least 5400 by maturity (the 'final index level'), the capital would be protected. If however it did not recover to the 'initial index level' and say at maturity the 'final index level' was 4860 (10% lower than the initial level), you would only receive back 90% of your capital.

· Invests in assets issued by Barclays Bank PLC – Rated AA- by Standard & Poor’s and Aa3 by Moody's

· Eligible for Stocks and Shares ISA investment including transfers. Remember only 1 ISA per tax year can be held.

· If held outside an ISA as a direct investment, returns are taxed as income.

· Eligible in most cases for pension portfolio investment within a Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) or Small Self Administered Scheme (SSAS) investmentM

· Early withdrawal is possible but may reduce the initial investment

Help with New Year's Resolutions

If you are looking for fun and motivating ways to shape up in 2010 the Fitness Centre can help! All club members and non-members can benefit from attending one of our group exercise classes – we have aerobic, conditioning, strength building and mind body classes running throughout the week days and at weekends. Classes are suitable for all levels and abilities, we just ask that you wear non-marking soles to prevent wear and tear on the squash court. Further details are available from the club or our website.

If the gym is more your thing why not try personal training? Personal training is available to club members and non-members (for an additional guest fee) and is great way for everyone to get that little bit extra from their exercise session whether you are new to the gym environment or an experienced user. There are no set rules as to how often you have personal training so why not book in for a free, no obligation consultation with a member of the team.

Finally, if you are a fitness member, why not speak to an instructor about updating your fitness programme or getting some fresh ideas to revitalise your workout.

New Gym Instructor

Welcome to our new part time gym instructor, Jane Lister. Jane will mainly be working at the weekends and has a wealth of experience from her previous roles working in gyms and teaching fitness classes. We wish her well in her new position.
