NEWS FROM OUR SPONSORS JM GLENDINNING LIFE & PENSIONS

Guaranteed investment solutions for uncertain times

Unless you've been in hibernation you will have noticed that there has been some volatility in the financial markets in recent times! In fact across the last 13 years the UK stock market has had some major ups and downs due to a number of factors, most recently the credit crunch.

With all that said, equities do offer good long term returns, although the danger being that when you want your capital or your income from your investment it is just the time when the stock market has crashed and you are now set to get back less than you expected, putting a strain on your finances and standard of living.

Many people have recently looked towards cash to make sure their investments are safe which in turn creates its own problems! Current interest rates are at an all time low and inflation looks to be on the up (3.5% announced recently). This in effect means that the value of your money is reducing as it can buy less. The fact remains that investing in the stock market is a solid long term way of beating inflation, but with the inherent risk that we will see further stock market corrections along the way.

So what can you do to stop that risk? For the last 15 years or so, there have been products available that allow you to invest with returns linked to and dependent on stock market returns, with a guarantee that you will get your money back, usually providing you hold the investment for a fixed period of time. Some of these provide a base level that your investment cannot fall below, for example what you invested. The problem is that because of the volatility in the stock market you might only get a return of capital!

A new breed of product goes a step further than this and 'locks in' your gains periodically so investing in the stock market means that when it performs you get the benefit and when it crashes you are not exposed to it! All in all this can be a win-win solution for clients looking for stock market returns but without the volatility. These new products are not however suitable for everyone and we therefore strongly recommend you consult an independent financial adviser, who will determine your personal circumstances, needs and objectives and risk profile before making any recommendation.

NEWS FROM OUR SPONSORS JM GLENDINNING LIFE & PENSIONS

Increase the Income from your Savings and Investments

A new investment opportunity has just been launched and is available for investments until 1st March 2010 unless it is oversubscribed before.

The Regular Income Bond is a product designed to bridge the gap between low return / low risk deposits and high income / high risk investments. With the final return of the plan linked to the performance of the FTSE 100 Index, investors in the Bond have the opportunity to enjoy a competitive fixed income through to maturity.

Although the Bond provides a significant level of protection, it is not a guaranteed investment and capital may be at risk. Repayment of capital depends on the performance of the FTSE 100 Index as noted in the summary below. The product might appeal to income investors who seek regular above-average income and who are prepared to accept some risk to their capital. I would however stress that the plan will not be suitable for everyone and we would undertake a full review of a clients attitude towards investment risk, their circumstances, needs and objectives before providing any recommendation.

The offer in summary is as follows:

· Six-year investment

· Income payable monthly or annually

· Income rates:

o Monthly payment option – 0.53% gross paid monthly in arrears

o Annual payment option – 6.5% gross paid annually in arrears

· Full repayment of investors’ capital unless the FTSE 100 falls by more than 50% during the term and fails to recover to its starting level by maturity. In this event capital will be reduced 1:1 in line with the Index. For example, if at commencement of the plan the FTSE 100 'initial index level' was 5400 and during the term it dropped to 2646 (51% drop) but had then recovered to at least 5400 by maturity (the 'final index level'), the capital would be protected. If however it did not recover to the 'initial index level' and say at maturity the 'final index level' was 4860 (10% lower than the initial level), you would only receive back 90% of your capital.

· Invests in assets issued by Barclays Bank PLC – Rated AA- by Standard & Poor’s and Aa3 by Moody's

· Eligible for Stocks and Shares ISA investment including transfers. Remember only 1 ISA per tax year can be held.

· If held outside an ISA as a direct investment, returns are taxed as income.

· Eligible in most cases for pension portfolio investment within a Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) or Small Self Administered Scheme (SSAS) investmentM

· Early withdrawal is possible but may reduce the initial investment

If you think that this type of product might be of interest to you please contact us on 01943 876631 to arrange an initial no obligation discussion at our expense.

If you are looking for fun and motivating ways to shape up in 2010 the Fitness Centre can help! All club members and non-members can benefit from attending one of our group exercise classes – we have aerobic, conditioning, strength building and mind body classes running throughout the week days and at weekends. Classes are suitable for all levels and abilities, we just ask that you wear non-marking soles to prevent wear and tear on the squash court. Further details are available from the club or our website.

If the gym is more your thing why not try personal training? Personal training is available to club members and non-members (for an additional guest fee) and is great way for everyone to get that little bit extra from their exercise session whether you are new to the gym environment or an experienced user. There are no set rules as to how often you have personal training so why not book in for a free, no obligation consultation with a member of the team.

Finally, if you are a fitness member, why not speak to an instructor about updating your fitness programme or getting some fresh ideas to revitalise your workout.

PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE

More people than ever are now choosing to receive medical treatment privately rather than through the NHS.

· We all lead busy lives, so having the ability to plan treatment when it suits you around holidays, business trips, family commitments can be a big help.

· Waiting for treatment on the NHS can not only be frustrating but also physically uncomfortable and emotionally stressful often causing you to put your life on hold until treatment has been received.

· If you need to be admitted to hospital, recovering in the peace and quiet of your own private room with en-suite facilities and good quality meals can help.

· MRSA is one of the major worries for patients being admitted to an NHS hospital. Receiving treatment in a private hospital may reduce this worry and provide further peace of mind.

· Having the ability to sleep in a private room as opposed to a busy noisy hospital ward can also help speed up recovery.

· Early diagnosis from a private medical consultant can often help prevent serious illness.

Already got Private Medical Insurance?

· Every year more and more new and innovative plans are being introduced by Health Insurance companies.

October News

NEWS FROM OUR SPONSORS JM GLENDINNING LIFE & PENSIONS

PROTECT YOUR INCOME AGAINST ACCIDENTS OR ILL HEALTH

Regardless of whether you are single or married, with or without a family, if you are suddenly unable to work, your income disappears. Yet, while many of us cover our lives to protect our families, very few take the time to protect our health.

An income protection plan is an insurance policy that provides you with a monthly tax-free income if you are unable to work as a result of accident or illness. Most policies pay a regular monthly amount until a full recovery is made although shorter-term plans are also available. They should also be seen as an extremely viable alternative to the more traditional accident, sickness and unemployment policy.

Income protection can be useful as a supplement to state benefits, such as statutory sick pay, as these could prove insufficient to maintain your lifestyle compared with what you may currently be earning. It is traditionally used to cover your salary and the maximum amount you can earn will enable you to broadly match the after-tax earnings you would lose.

Costs vary depending on your circumstances, your medical history, the time for which you defer payments but also on the provider. The more you are covered for, the higher the premium. However, cheaper is not necessarily better and therefore, as with all forms of insurance and protection, it is imperative you read the small print on your income protection policy to ensure you know what is covered.

Finally, it is also essential that you are open about any previous medical conditions, regardless of whether or not you think they are significant. Non-disclosure remains one of the most common reasons for claims being declined by providers and come right at the moment you need the money. Financial advice is therefore highly recommended to help ensure you find the plan most suitable for you.

If you would like to learn more about these type of plans for both you and your business (if applicable), please contact Sarah Redshaw on 01943 883627 or email her at lifeandpensions@jmgib.co.uk to arrange an appointment with one of our advisers.

CAFE/BAR

Thank you to everyone for your continual support of the café bar. The cafe bar is getting busier by the day and the feedback has been really positive. The new carpet has now been laid and the chairs have cleaned up nicely. We’ve also had Wi-Fi fitted in the back meeting/viewing room and it is available for hire.

We also welcome a few new members of cafe bar staff. Katie and Emma have recently joined us and they cover the day shifts with Sophie. Adam, Chris and Charlotte have joined Jovana, working part time shifts, mainly in the evenings and Colin and Claire continue to work as dedicated full time members of staff and also work as Duty Supervisors and can also run the kitchen.

Thank you to everyone who supported the ‘Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ on Friday 25th September. The morning was a fantastic success..we even made it onto the local radio station and a spot in the Ilkley Gazette! We can’t disclose the exact money raised just yet as the money boxes are collected sealed from Macmillan organisers and they take them away to count them, so as soon as we get that figure we’ll let you know. Thank you especially to Sue Walters who very kindly organised our ‘Bring & Buy Stall’ and the stall alone raised £150. Congratulations go to the winners of the Grand Raffle who were John Harrison (winning the 3 months full membership); Sam Seshan (winning a bottle of Champagne), Fiona McKinnen-Evans (dinner & wine for 2 at the café bar) and Linda English (5 free dance classes at Joze’s School of Dance.)

Thinking of booking a children’s party? We now hold them right here at your club. Tennis & Squash Parties can be booked at the weekends. Flyers are currently being prepared and the format involves a one hour session with a tennis or squash coach filled with fun games & activities, then up to the viewing room for a birthday feast and traditional party games with your personal party host. Please contact the café bar for further details on 01943 607182 or www.cafebar@iltsc.co.uk.

NEWS FROM MEMBER MIKE GIBBONS – TRANSPLANT GAMES IN COVENTRY

At the end of July I joined the throng of transplantees competing in this year's annual event. As a new boy, I did not know what to expect and how the competition would stretch me. As luck would have it, I returned home with two gold medals, within my age category of course (over 70's), one for Squash and one for the 5Km run. Both, in all honesty, most unexpected. It was a thrill to be presented with my Squash medal by Olympic world record holder, Dave Moorcroft, who was the Patron of the Games this year in Coventry. However, I have to commend my success to my wife Ann, whose dedicated donation of one of her kidneys made it all possible. The Games themselves exist to promote the virtues of organ transplantation and display the visible evidence of the big difference it can make to the lives of the recipients involved and importantly, to encourage more people to join the Donor Register. Well done to Mike from everyone at ILT&SC.

SQUASH NEWS

ILKLEY SQUASH JUNIOR MILLIE PUGHE WINS GRAND PRIX, ENGLAND NUMBER 1

Millie Pughe cemented her place as England No1 in her age group by winning the Grand Prix title last weekend in Birmingham. Ranked 1 for the tournament, she fought back to win a tough 5 setter in the semi-finals, having been down 10 – 2 in the 5th to win 12 – 10. In the final she showed her better fitness by winning 3-0. A fantastic result for Millie and great for the club to have the top nationally ranked player.

Squash Teams

The new season has well and truly started and the Ilkley teams are all doing well. There is a new team this year playing in the Harrogate 3rd Division. Simon Healey is leading the way, with old campaigner Nick White and a group of our top juniors, Tom & Jack Bearpark along with Ethan Thornton making up the team.

The ladies teams will start from mid October, while the Harrogate Junior squash teams will start from early November.

Juniors

A number of our junior players have played in a number of tournaments this season and the results have been very good. Millie Pughe, winning the Under 15 Grand Prix, has been the highlight so far. Recently at the Yorkshire Champs Millie Pughe was 3rd under 17 Girls, Tilly Spence 3rd Under 15 Girls, Stu MacGregor 6th Under 13 Boys, Jack Bearpark 5th Under 15 Boys, Tom Bearpark 9th Under 17 Boys, Ethan Thornton 8th Under 17 Boys and Tom Pughe 3rd Under 17 Boys. Ilkley has some of the best juniors in Yorkshire and we wish them all the best for the season.

Tournaments

There are a couple of tournaments coming up. There is a half day fun squash tournament on Saturday 10th October. Please put your name down on the list on the squash notice board.

The Junior squash tournament will be held on November 21/22. Come and watch our juniors playing in this tournament. This tournament is sponsored by Fudge.

Sponsors

Where would we be if we did not have our squash sponsors? Our sponsors help in supporting our junior programme, sponsor our tournaments, our squash leagues and give great deals to our members. Please continue to support our sponsors, so we can have a squash programme we are all proud of.

Squash sponsors, Nidd Vale, who sponsor squash coach, Robbie Burnett and the BSPA event have had a number of squash members come to them and they have received some great deals. Always mention you are from the Ilkley Squash Club . Ashlands Veterinary Hospital, Fudge and Ilkley Osteopathic Practiceare also our main sponsors. Thank you to Andy & Anne MacGregor from Ashlands Veterinary Hospital, Terry Sierocki, from Fudge and Amos Grech-Cini from Ilkley Osteopathic Practice. All these sponsors are members of the club. If you would like to be involved, please contact Robbie.

TELEPHONE AND WEBSITE SERVICES

We will shortly be investing in a new telephone system which should give members a much better service when calling into the club.

We will also be refreshing our website over the next couple of months to make it more user friendly and accessible and hope that these two improvements will give real benefits to members.

CHEWING GUM AND DRINKS

Following a number of issues with chewing gum being trodden into the carpets and court surfaces and left around the cafe/bar, which has caused damage to property and has also caused general inconvenience to members, the Executive Committee has made a decision that gum should no longer be permitted on Club premises.

There are also a number of sticky marks on the indoor courts where people have brought hot drinks and cordials onto the courts. Please can you ensure that only water is consumed on the courts.

Thank you for your assistance.

TENNIS NEWS

Adult Group Coaching Places

There are still some places available in the Saturday afternoon group beginner and intermediate group coaching lessons (members and non-members). For more information please contact reception or coach Chris Wheeler on 07738908185.

Indoor Tennis Court Refurbishment

The court contractors will be aiming to complete the snagging list of repairs to the courts by the end of the week of the 10th January which will include some resurfacing of the court areas. This will mean that the courts will need to be closed the week beginning the 4th January for a full week and that the Spring junior coaching programme will commence the week of the 11th January. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to members and particularly to block booking holders. Any block bookings will receive a cash refund for any courts already booked and paid for during that week. We are also hoping to have an official opening of the indoor courts in the middle/towards the end of January once this work has been completed. Please see notice boards and future email newsletters for further information.

JM Glendinning Group International Tournament

The LTA has recently reviewed its international tournament programme of events and has now decided to reduce the number of grass court events following Wimbledon. This means that its calendar has now been altered so that all grass court tournaments are completed prior to County Week (19th July). We are pleased to announce that despite the LTA reducing the number of international events that Ilkley has retained its Men's Futures event. The event will be in the same format on grass but will now take place the week beginning the 5th July (qualifying from the 4th). The majority of the other events including the junior competitions will continue to take place at the end of July in the traditional Ilkley Open week. The date change for the international event should now also relieve some pressure on the courts for the various Open competitions.

Please be assured that there will be some courts available for members to use during the international tournament week and we also hope to extend the interactive tennis roadshow and invite schools down to take part in tennis activities during that week. We also hope to involve the children in our coaching programmes that week in clinics with some of the international players.

JM GLENDINNING NEWS

Catch the ups without the downs

Over the last 18 months or more we have seen significant volatility in investment markets. Whilst many industry commentators might argue that now is perhaps the best time to invest and 'get more for your money', investors are understandably wary, some having lost significant paper losses during this time. However the other dilemma is the poor returns achievable from deposits.

Structured Investment products could provide a solution for some clients. We would stress however that they are not suitable for all investors and we will not provide any recommendation before first assessing a clients personal circumstances, needs and objectives and attitude to investment risk.

Most of the products offer exposure to potential rises in the FTSE 100 index, whilst protecting any downside investment risk. Some will offer 100% capital protection whilst others will provide full capital protection if for example the FTSE 100 index does not fall by 50% or more and provide growth of 8% p.a. gross. An income producing product is also about to be launched which will pay a gross income of 7.25% p.a. 100% capital protection is provided if the FTSE 100 index or S&P 500 index does not fall by 50% or more over the 5 year term. It is certainly not a 'one size fits all' scenario, however for some clients who want to dip their toes back into the market but are wary about the potential downside, they certainly have a place as part of an investment portfolio. Many of the products offer an ISA option and a direct investment option so capital gains tax allowances can be used, and indeed some also allow Self Invested Personal Pensions to invest.

These types of contracts often become fully subscribed within a short time after launch. If you would like to find out more please register your interest as soon as possible with Sarah Redshaw on 01943 883627 or email lifeandpensions@jmgib.co.uk

CAFE BAR NEWS

Hello to everyone from Sarah Herd (ILT&SC’s New Café/Bar Manager

I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has made me feel so welcome here – it is such a wonderful place to work.

We’ve got lots of exciting new dishes on our menu and will also be offering smoothies, fresh juices, milk shakes, jacket potatoes, daily specials and much much more!

ALTERATIONS TO THE CLUBHOUSE

Although M&V have had the carpets and furniture cleaned in the café/bar, we do not feel that the carpet has worn well and our supplier has agreed to provide a replacement carpet for the café/bar and meeting room areas and new plants for the verandah free of charge. The carpet will be fitted in August, following the tournament.

Stourton Road and the approach road to the club currently has a number of pot holes in it and we are conscious that it does need repairing. We are, however, waiting until the builders have completed their work before filling and resurfacing sections of the road as the heavy lorry traffic is currently contributing to the holes in the road.

Our boilers are currently being replaced and the new boilers should ensure that at peak times we have plenty of hot water (particularly on Tuesday nights when the harriers are in the club).

We have had a problem with the drains and people may have experienced foul smells in the men’s and ladies changing room showers. Work has been carried out and we hope that this problem has now been resolved.

TENNIS NEWS

INDOOR TENNIS COURT REFURBISHMENT

The indoor court refurbishment is on track to be completed at the end of July and therefore the indoor courts should be available for members to use from the 20th July. It is however possible that some minor additional work may have to be carried out after the tournament but we will inform members if and when we need to close the courts down in August. Details of the indoor court rates for the summer period will be posted in reception from the 16th July and will also be automatically included on the computerised booking system. We hope to have an official opening of the indoor courts towards the end of September in conjunction with a launch party for the café/bar now that it has been brought back in house.

There is no entry charge to watch the event and we welcome members and non members alike. Please invite your friends and relatives.

Other events in the tournament include:-

Veterans’ events – attracts top vets players from around the UK and this year there is also a 40 and over Women’s Doubles event.

Handicap events are very popular with club members and local players. You are given a number of points start in a game if you are playing against a better player.

The Men’s Evening Singles is called the Men’s Wharfedale Singles this year and will commence on Saturday 25th July.

The first time this year as well as the 10&U Mini Tennis Green event, we will also be hosting a 9&U Mini Tennis Orange and a 8&U Mini Tennis Red event.

There will also be a number of activities taking place during the tournament, including a multi coloured inflatable kids zone sponsored by Appleyard Jaguar Bradford (which will be positioned in the Club’s field from 27th July to the 1st August.) Please bring your kids down and have a go for only £5! There will also be a free Search for a Star (10 years and under event) on the morning of finals day (sponsored by Skipton Building Society) which will aim to identify the next Andy Murray with a prize of a year’s free coaching offered to the lucky winner. Application forms for both sets of kids’ activities are available from reception.

Parking is in the sports field adjacent to the club and access is directly from the sports field. Entry to the car park will be signed. There is no access for members to the normal car parking area adjacent to the clubhouse throughout the week. This is strictly reserved for disabled and emergency access. Your co-operation in parking in the sports field is appreciated.

Fitness Centre & Squash Courts-The fitness centre is open as normal although the free weights area is required for the referees’ control desk. This will be relocated to squash court 1. There are no fitness classes during tournament week (except Bodypump at 8.30am on Saturday 25th July). Squash Court 3 will be used as a rest area for the umpires and squash courts 2, 4 & 5 will be available as normal, but will be used as a back up for the children’s tennis activities in case of bad weather (between 11am and 2.30pm daily). We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our squash members during the week but hope that squash players will come down and enjoy and support the tennis event.

Thanks once again to our title sponsors, the JM Glendinning Group and to other key sponsors, Skipton Building Society, Appleyard Jaguar Bradford, Westville House School, Garbutt & Elliott, Bolton Abbey Mowers, Clough Tomblin, Raven Audley Court, Alan J Picken Business Transfer Agents, Priceless Print. CLUB CLOSED TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 SPONSORED BY THE GRAMMAR SCHOOL AT LEEDS

Wimbledon may have been on, but Ilkley’s top players were also in action in Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club’s Closed Tournament Finals Day on Sunday. This finals day is the start of a busy tournament season at Ilkley, with County Week following closely on (20th -24th July) culminating in the blue ribbon event of the JM Glendinning Group Ilkley International Tennis Tournament (25th July to the 1st August).

The Club’s annual event caters for all the members, from 8 to 80 with Mini Tennis events for the younger players and a range of Junior and Senior and also Veteran events for the more experienced.

The main singles event was once again won by talented player, Steven Hunt, who beat his friend and rival James Ickringill, son of Head Coach, Simon. Steven then proceeded to take the Men’s Doubles title, partnering Ed Young who himself had been runner up in the 18U Singles event. They beat James Ickringill and his father Simon in a close 3 set match. Steven was then on for a clean sweep of titles but was thwarted in his attempt in the Mixed Doubles event, where James partnering club coach, Amanda Kayes took his revenge and beat Steven and Lauren Flint. In the boys’ events, Jaspar Morvaridi retained his title, beating Alex Wilkins in the 16U final and Cameron Davidson and Nikki Corless once again played a very close 14U final with Cameron just piping Nikki to the post, 2 sets to 1. Thomas Knapton was away on finals day, having been picked to represent Yorkshire in the 12U County Cup but before leaving for that event, won the 12U Club Closed event beating Thomas Weir in the final. The strength in depth of players at as young age an age as 10 has been recognized recently by the Lawn Tennis Association who invited a number of Ilkley players to its National talent ID day at Bolton Arena and in both girls and boys events many of these national standard players were fighting it out for the various titles.

The Women’s events were again dominated by talented junior players with Hannah Pulford defending her titles and taking the Ladies Singles title beating club coach Becky Bourdon in the final. There was also a strong Ladies Doubles final with Caroline Clay and Anita Perry just piping Linda Burton and Donna Brosnan to the title in a close 3 set match.

Thanks go to The Grammar School at Leeds and Fudge Hair Products for kindly sponsoring this event. For a full list of winners, please see the club board in reception.

Performance Update

We had some excellent results over the May half term. Thomas Knapton lead the way by winning his first grade 3 tournament, the under 12s at Doncaster. Aaron Yang quickly followed up by winning the U9s green ball competition. Zoe Judkowski just fell short in reaching the final of the Under 11 Welti grade 3.In the County Cup Completions Ilkley was well represented. Thomas Burton played for Yorkshire in the under 10, where he won all his matches helping Yorkshire to reach the National Finals. In the Finals Thomas again won all his singles, unfortunately Yorkshire finished runners up. This is a fantastic effort to finish second in a National completion. Thomas Knapton got a call up to play for the U12 where again he won all his matches.

I need to know, can anyone help in hosting these players for the 2 nights? There is a total of 9 players and 4 adults. It is great for our players to be able to play and socialise with players from overseas and many a friendship has developed from such occasions. Any help would be much appreciated, please contact Robbie at the club or on 07786948153.

JM GLENDINNING NEWS

Options For Investors

UK interest rates have tumbled in recent months, from 5% in September 2008 to just 0.5% by March 2009. This might spell good news for borrowers, but not so for savers who have witnessed plummeting rates on their bank and building society accounts. Many savers rely on interest payments to supplement their income, and are now looking for alternative strategies that will generate income.

A cash ISA is one alternative. Rates on cash ISAs are not necessarily much higher than rates on normal deposit accounts, but ISAs do at least pay this interest tax-free. Meanwhile, in an environment where UK interest rates have reached unprecedented lows, bonds might offer an opportunity to generate a stable income stream with less volatility than the equity market – and, having fallen heavily last year, bonds are considered well priced.

ISA allowance have increased to a maximum of £5,100 per annum for a Cash ISA from 6 April 2010 (6 October 2009 if you are over 50 or attain age 50 between then and 5th April 2010), with a combined cash and stocks & shares ISA allowance of £10,200.

As share prices have fallen, dividend yields have risen significantly, increasing the attractiveness of equity income funds. Firms that pay high dividends tend to be established companies with stable businesses and strong balance sheets. Admittedly, in the current climate, some companies are cutting or canceling these dividends as they attempt to protect their profits from the economic downturn. Nevertheless, an equity income strategy allows investors to benefit from a relatively high yield whilst also giving their capital the opportunity to grow.

Whatever your current situation, trust J M Glendinning to help you make an informed decision.

For further information and to see whether we can help you please contact Sarah Redshaw on 01943 883627 or email lifeandpensions@jmgib.co.uk. Sarah will be pleased to arrange an initial no obligation meeting with one of our independent financial advisers at our expense.

J M Glendinning (Life & Pensions) Ltd is an appointed representative of J M Glendinning Insurance Brokers Ltd which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

NO JOINING FEE OFFER

There will be a no joining fee offer for all new members throughout until the end of June 2009. The offer applies to people who have not been members of the club for 2 years or more.

CAFE BAR OPERATION

Following the recent decision of the Club and M&V to terminate the café/bar catering contract early, the Policy Committee has been actively pursuing a number of options in order to find a suitable replacement. After a lengthy review, advertising and interview process, a shortlist of three potential caterers was drawn up (two outside catering companies and one manager) and these candidates were given the opportunity to give a short presentation in front of the Committee. Following lengthy discussions by the PC, and given the strong body of opinion among members over the past 12 months that it is better for this operation to be managed in house, it was unanimously agreed to recruit another café/bar manager.

The position of café/bar manager was offered to Sarah Herd and I am delighted to say that she has accepted the job. Sarah will be joining the staff full-time on 15th June and will be present during the 2-week hand-over period, with M&V leaving the club on 30th June. This will give her a few weeks to find her feet before the tournament at the end of July. Sarah will be joining us from Bolton Arena where she is currently manager of their café/restaurant, and has a wealth of experience in sports club/pub/outside catering, marketing and sales. Sarah is very enthusiastic about the position and already has a long list of ideas about how she will go about developing the business.

Although it is envisaged that Sarah will be making some changes to the café/bar operation so that she can achieve the Committee’s long-term goals, it is unlikely that any significant changes will take place in the first few weeks as she will need time to consult with members and assess the demands/needs of various groups within the Club. Members should be reminded that the Club cannot sustain making losses in the café/bar for long and it is therefore important that we all support the new manager and use the café/bar to its full potential. It is hoped that, given her enthusiasm and experience and the support of the various committees, the café/bar will become the social focus of ILT&SC. I hope that you will all join with the Committee and make Sarah feel welcome in her new role.

Ilkley Juniors are Best in County

Skipton Building Society has always been a keen supporter of the local community and has for the past 5 years provided financial support to Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club’s junior activities at the JM Glendinning Group Ilkley Open International Tournament.

As part of the Ilkley Open which this year will be held at the Club from the 25th July to the 1st August, Skipton Building Society sponsor the “Search for a Star Event” which takes place on the morning of finals day (1st August between 9-11am). The event is run by the Club’s LTA qualified coaches headed up by Alan Cutts, the Club’s Junior Development Co-ordinator. The event provides children with expert tennis tuition using a fun interactive roadshow. Last year 40 children attended the event and the winner, Amber Woffindin received the fantastic prize of a year’s free tennis coaching at the club and a number of other prizes were also given out to the children. The Search for a Star event was open to all under 11s, FREE OF CHARGE and was advertised widely in the local community giving access to all children in this age group to try the sport.

The event has now run for 5 years and the previous year, Matthew Revis came out on top. Both Amber and Matthew have recently scored another success by being invited to a Regional (North East of England) Talent ID Camp run by the governing body for tennis, the Lawn Tennis Association. This is a great achievement and proves how successful the “Search for a Star” event has been at Ilkley. In recognition of the great coaching work that Alan carries out as part of the team of coaches at the club, he has also been invited to run some of the mini tennis County LTA camps.

Ilkley players have also enjoyed other key successes and the U12 boys' team were recently victorious in the National Junior Club League (Yorkshire division) event at Hull at the beginning of May. The team was Thomas Knapton, Matthew Newell, Thomas Weir and Will Hatton. They beat Chapel Allerton 5-1 and Thongsbridge 6-0 in the group stage. In the semi-finals they beat Hallamshire (Sheffield) 5-1 and then went on to beat Chapel Allerton again in the final 6-0. Congratulations also to the 14U team who won the Yorkshire County LTA National Junior Club League event on the 9th and 10th May. The team was Thomas Knapton, Cameron Davidson, Nikki Corless and Rhys Boven. They beat Hallamshire 6-0, Thongsbridge 5-1 and in the final beat Graves 4-2.

There have also been various inter county and inter regional matches successes. Will Roberts, Aaron Yang and George Hill represented Yorkshire in a 9 & under County match against Lancashire where Will managed to win all his singles matches and George did well to win one being a year young. In the inter regional competition North East verses North West where only 2 players are selected from each age group, Ilkley had both 9 & under players, Will and Aaron and Aaron won all his singles matches. Thomas Burton was the non travelling reserve in the 10 & under event.

Finally, congratulations also go to a number of players who were recently selected to attend the LTA’s National Talent ID day. Will Roberts coached by Amanda Kayes, Aaron Yang, George Hill and Oliver Burton all coached by the Club’s Performance Coach, James Turner, attended and this is a fantastic achievement for the players and their coaches.

TENNIS NEWS

Indoor Court Refurbishment

The works to the indoor courts (described in the recent edition of the printed newsletter) will commence on the 27th April. This means that there will be no indoor courts available over the Summer period. The grounds staff will also from the 20th April be removing some of the items including the curtains on the indoor courts in preparation for the start of the work and the back netting and court furniture will be removed from the 26th April. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to members during this time but we hope that members will feel that the benefits of newly refurbished courts will outweigh the inconvenience.

The Tennis Committee has tried to accommodate as many of its activities as possible on the club courts but other venues will also be used for some of the coaching/team matches. Outdoor courts can be booked as normal by members either through reception or online (£1 per court per hour), although demand for courts is likely on occasions to outweigh the available capacity. The grass courts will also be available for bookings in this way. Refunds will be provided to members who book all weather courts but cancel them due to bad weather. Bad weather is deemed to be where it is actually raining at any time in the 2 hours before and up to and including the time of play or where the courts are unplayable (e.g. if courts 6-8 are waterlogged or the grass courts are too wet to play on).

To all you social players......

...we have an increasingly active social tennis programme currently focused around Wednesday evening social tennis in the season together with social tournaments (dates available from reception).

As part of its review of our overall strategy for tennis the tennis committee is looking to find a couple of volunteers to develop and coordinate the programme so that once things get back to normal in terms of court availability we can make our social tennis programme a really vibrant and thriving part of our activities. Marion Smith has kindly agreed to act as point person for this so if you have any thoughts on how to develop social tennis and wish to get involved please contact Marion on 01943 816171 or our Tennis Chairman, Richard Bourdon.

We are also looking for volunteers to run the Social night each week. A form is posted on reception if you would like to volunteer. The organiser basically has to move people about on the courts and blow a whistle to change everyone round so that everyone mixes in.
