SQUASH NEWS
BSPA International Squash Tournament – 25th to 27th April 2008
Nidd Vale Group certainly don’t waste any time … hot on the back of announcing that they have taken over Glovers Peugeot in Ilkley they are now firmly cementing their relationship with the Club by showing their support for this key international squash event.
Over the years the tournament has attracted top players from all over the world and last year, the standard couldn’t have been higher with 2 of the world’s top 10 ladies fighting it out to take the title with Vicky Botwright finally winning over Madeline Perry. The men’s event was similarly exceptional with Malaysia’s Ong Beng Hee (number 16 in the world) taking the title by beating Scott Handley in the final.
We are once again expecting a very strong entry and are delighted to have such a high profile title sponsor in the Nidd Vale Group. Their support and sponsorship is invaluable and is key to enabling us to host this international squash event once again. We look forward to a long and successful relationship into the future.
Paul Stokes, Managing Director of the Nidd Vale Group, commented, “ We are delighted to be able to sponsor this local prestigious event, so soon after our acquisition of the Glovers business. I am sure the event will receive a lot of local interest and this will be good for both our concerns.”
Dean Eustace, Group Sales Manager of the Nidd Vale Group added “ We are always keen to support local events like this in the community and it has always been part of our strategy to have our name high profile.”
Nidd Vale hold the franchises for Vauxhall, Saab, Mazda, Seat, Mitsubishi and now Peugeot and trade from locations at Harrogate, Wetherby and Ilkley. For further information, please contact Dean Eustace on 01423 500005.

Success for players over Easter

In the Under 11 age group at South Leeds Thomas Knapton reached the semi final just loosing to the eventual winner on a deciding tie break. Thomas hit some spectacular forehands which we hope to see more of in the future.
At the Under 10 age group in Hull, Thomas Weir played some great tennis to reach the final and Will Hatton showed super improvement in his matches only loosing to the eventual winner. Again in Hull, Thomas Burton in the Under 10 age group reached the final with out dropping a set, showing very good all court and tactical skills. JUNIOR SQUASH RESULTS
Ilkley top squash junior Millie Pughe was narrowly beaten in the final of the National under 13 Championship by top Welsh player Fiona May Murphy, by 3 sets to 1.
It was a great performance by the English number 1 to make the final as the competition was very strong, with players from all over Great Britain. Millie played well, but just found the Welsh girl’s ability to retrieve shots from all over the court too good. A good learning experience for Millie, which is sure to help in her long term goals.
Ilkley had another player at the Nationals, Sean Thornton who played in the under 17 Boys. Sean lost in the first round, but fought back in the in the plate division winning his first round game, but then lost in the 2nd round.
Recently there has been more good news for Ilkley junior squash players, as a number were selected to play for Yorkshire and they all won their matches. Millie Pughe was selected to play in the under 19 girls and to her surprise won her match 3-0. Tom Pughe and Ethan Thornton played in the Boys under 15 and they too won their matches 3-0. Both Yorkshire teams won and now move into the next round.

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Unsupervised Children
While recognising that we are a family Club which welcomes and encourages children to use its facilities, members of staff, our Acting Manager and the Policy Committee have become increasingly concerned about some behaviour.
Over the Half Term Holiday we had complaints from other Club members and staff about children running around the clubhouse as if it was a playground. Therefore, as the Christmas holidays start next week, we thought we should ask parents to help us to make life tolerable for everyone.
As a rule, unsupervised children should only be at the Club for coaching or to play tennis or squash. Therefore, for the sake of other members, on safety grounds and for the respect of the Club’s facilities, would Parents either supervise their children or explain to them what acceptable behaviour is. Our Staff and Coaches have been told that they may reprimand bad behaviour and if it persists, Parents will have to be contacted to come and collect their child!
Please remember The Club is in no way responsible for your children, except when they are participating in organised activities.

APPLEYARD JAGUAR TIM HENMAN EVENT
Tim Henman visited Ilkley on the 13th July and it wasn't his first time at the club! Yes Tim played in the Ilkley Open in the early 1990s winning the 18U Boys event and also scooping the Courtesy Cup which is given to the player who exhibits the best conduct during the week of the tournament.
Tim was involved in a number of activities on the 13th including giving out prizes to primary and secondary schools. Later in the afternoon he also passed on coaching tips and prizes to our club mini tennis players who were involved in a fun tournament. He also attended a question and answer session involving some of our older most talented junior players, mini tennis players and a number of other children from the club's tennis programme. Our older talented players then took part in a coaching session with Tim and he passed on some of his considerable expertise to them.
Adult members were not by any means left out and more than 300 members attended "An Audience with Tim Henman" which was held on indoor courts 4 and 5 in the evening. Tim's answers were very interesting including his message to juniors that if they are to excel in the sport they must give it a huge amount of dedication and commitment. He also mentioned that he would like to see the Davis Cup altered so that it is more akin to the World Cup football tournament format. Tim also neatly side stepped member, Marion Smith's request for him to partner her in this year's Veteran's Mixed Doubles Ilkley Open event!
Tim must have signed in excess of 400 autographs on the day and the feedback has been fantastic with comments such as "we are so lucky and so grateful that Tim was prepared to spend a day with us…. he was so amenable and approachable and ….it is the best day I can remember at the tennis club." We have sent a letter of thanks to both Tim and to Jaguar for making the day possible and we have also included a letter from 7 year old Zoe Judkowski who has thanked him on behalf of the juniors.
